Empathy and trust are the basics for effective and constructive communication and the development of relationships.
They are essential skills for:
- developing ideas and solutions;
- solving problems;
- effective communication;
- avoiding or diffusing conflict.
Building Trust:
- the ability to establish rapport with people to develop discussions and argument;
- the ability to listen and understand someone without necessarily agreeing with them;
- the ability to understand how someone feels and what they want to achieve;
- the ability to work collaboratively.
Listening:
- the ability to actively listen to others
- the ability to let others speak
- the ability to not 'jump in' and offer opinions when not appropriate

These strategies are suggestions for inclusive teaching and training. This list should not be considered exhaustive and it is important to remember that all learners are individuals, and good practice for one person may not necessarily be good practice for another.
