Empathy and trust are the basics for effective and constructive communication and the development of relationships.

They are essential skills for:

  • developing ideas and solutions;
  • solving problems;
  • effective communication;
  • avoiding or diffusing conflict.

Building Trust:

  • the ability to establish rapport with people to develop discussions and argument;
  • the ability to listen and understand someone without necessarily agreeing with them;
  • the ability to understand how someone feels and what they want to achieve;
  • the ability to work collaboratively.

Listening:

  • the ability to actively listen to others
  • the ability to let others speak
  • the ability to not 'jump in' and offer opinions when not appropriate

Difficulties with Empathy - adjustments to practice

These strategies are suggestions for inclusive teaching and training. This list should not be considered exhaustive and it is important to remember that all learners are individuals, and good practice for one person may not necessarily be good practice for another. General Guidance

  • A sensitive approach should be adopted when handling any problems that arise from group work - perhaps consider alternative ways for assignments to be completed.
  • In group situations, encourage learners to listen to the views of others and work collaboratively to find solutions to problems.
  • Create clear guidelines on listening skills, turn taking and understanding other people's view points.
  • Encourage learners to listen actively to the views and experiences of others by examining the reasons behind their views and commenting on them.
  • Listen to, and understand, the views of learners – to make them feel affirmed and validated and to help them to recognise how they can develop this skill for themselves.
